Preserving Avon’s History
Henry Harrison
Williams House (circa
1836)
Avon Cafe
and Coffee House is located in the
historic Williams House on the corner of
French Creek and Detroit Road.
Being
located
in a local landmark has given us a new appreciation for the history
of
this beautiful
city. The Williams House is one of only four homes listed in
Avon, by the U.S.
Department of the interior’s National Register of
Historic
Places.
The house was built in 1836 by Henry Harrison Williams, a local merchant. Williams operated a business in the house and ran the areas sawmill. In 1846 an addition was added to the main house. The architectural style is Greek Revival and was built of native wood cut at the H.H. Williams Sawmill.
Over the years the house has maintained its commercial ties to the past by housing several antique shops. Now, with some careful renovations, it has been converted into an office and retail center with a nice outdoor patio.
